BAE Systems Buys 130,000 SF Weld County Plant for Space Hardware, 600 Jobs

BAE Systems has closed on the purchase of a 130,000 square foot production facility on about 13 acres in Weld County, Colorado, and plans to retrofit it to expand manufacturing of space-based hardware and sensor systems, the company announced on October 21, 2026. It is BAE's first facility in Weld County (BAE Systems).
The company expects to hire more than 200 employees over the next 12 to 24 months and to employ about 600 people at full capacity. Retrofit work and equipment procurement will run through the rest of 2026, and production is scheduled to begin in early 2028 (BAE Systems; ColoradoBiz).
What Happened
BAE said the purchase is meant to meet customer demand and growth in space-based hardware and sensor systems. The Weld County site will join the company's existing Colorado production facilities in Boulder, Broomfield and Westminster (BAE Systems). Neither the company nor the coverage disclosed the purchase price or the specific city within the county (ColoradoBiz).
Alexis Wang, BAE's vice president of operations, said the company looks forward "to expanding our production capabilities in Colorado with our first facility in Weld County." Wang also said support from the Weld County Commissioners and the State of Colorado "played a key role in our ability" to complete the project (ColoradoBiz). Weld County Board of Commissioners Chair Scott James called it a project whose scale is "transformational," and Gov. Jared Polis said Colorado "continues to lead the nation in aerospace and advanced manufacturing" (BAE Systems).
Incentives
The Colorado Economic Development Commission approved up to $11,184,835 in Job Growth Incentive Tax Credits over eight years. It also approved CHIPS refundable tax credits, under which up to $8.6 million of earned incentives can be refunded at 80 percent of their value. Both awards depend on BAE meeting net new job and salary requirements (Manufacturing.net).

Why It Matters
The deal is the latest in a run of space and defense manufacturing investments that favor buying and converting existing buildings or expanding known sites over long greenfield timelines. Earlier this month we covered Blue Origin's planned $550 million Texas campus and the $4.5 billion B-21 assembly expansion in Palmdale. BAE's timeline, with more than a year of retrofit work ahead of a 2028 production start, shows that even an existing shell needs substantial interior work before it can support sensitive hardware production.
Implications for Owners, Developers, Contractors and Subs
For contractors and subs: Converting a general production building for space hardware typically involves upgraded power distribution, process utilities, controlled environments such as clean rooms, and security features. BAE has said only that it will retrofit the facility, so the exact scope is not public, but the 2026 retrofit window means mechanical, electrical and specialty interior trades in northern Colorado should watch for packages now.
For owners and developers: Existing industrial buildings with adequate land and power continue to attract defense and aerospace buyers. The 13-acre site leaves room on the parcel beyond the building footprint, a feature that matters to manufacturers planning to grow.
For the labor market: Hiring 200 people within two years, and up to 600 at full build-out, adds to demand for skilled technicians along Colorado's Front Range, where BAE already runs three plants.
What to Watch
- Disclosure of the facility's location within Weld County and the retrofit contractor.
- Whether BAE meets the hiring thresholds tied to its state tax credits.
- Additional space and sensor manufacturing investments in Colorado as federal space programs expand.
Bottom Line
BAE Systems is adding a fourth Colorado production site, a 130,000 square foot building in Weld County that it will retrofit through 2026 for space hardware and sensors. Production is set for early 2028, with about 600 jobs at full capacity and up to roughly $11.2 million in performance-based state tax credits.
