Mitsubishi Power to Double Savannah Turbine Plant With $490M Expansion

Mitsubishi Power Americas will invest $490 million to add 450,000 square feet to its Savannah Machinery Works gas turbine plant near Pooler, Georgia, more than doubling the facility and creating more than 220 jobs, the company and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced on October 23, 2026 (WSAV).
The expansion, backed by parent company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, will grow the plant's footprint from about 430,000 square feet to roughly 880,000 square feet (citybiz). WSAV reported an expected completion in 2029; no groundbreaking date has been announced (WSAV).
What Happened
Savannah Machinery Works, at 1000 Pine Meadow Drive, builds advanced class gas turbines, steam turbines and related power generation equipment (WSAV). The investment will fund additional machining capacity, advanced manufacturing technologies, improved material flow and upgraded production infrastructure, according to the company (Manufacturing.net).
New jobs will span manufacturing, engineering, quality control, maintenance, logistics and operational support. The announcement coincided with an expansion framework agreement between Mitsubishi Power Americas and the Savannah Economic Development Authority (SEDA) (citybiz). WSAV reported that the announcement did not mention specific state or local incentives (WSAV).
Mitsubishi Power Americas President and CEO Bill Newsom said, "Meeting the growing demand for power will require investment in facilities, in our supply chain and in our workforce" (citybiz). Brandon Bodie, vice president of Savannah Machinery Works, said, "Savannah has been a critical hub for Mitsubishi Power since 2010" (Manufacturing.net).
Background on the Plant
- Construction on the original plant began in September 2009, and the facility was completed in September 2010 as the company's first complete gas turbine manufacturing operation outside Japan.
- The first U.S. built Mitsubishi Power gas turbine shipped from Savannah in October 2012.
- The plant marked its 50th advanced class gas turbine in June 2023.
- The site sits near Interstates 95 and 16, with port and rail access for shipments across the Americas.
The company is also expanding in Florida. It recently expanded its Power Generation Services headquarters in Orlando and plans to open a new corporate headquarters in Lake Mary in November 2026, with additional facility expansions planned through 2028 (citybiz).
Why It Matters
The company tied the investment directly to rising demand for electricity, and the Savannah plant supplies the turbines used in new gas fired power plants. Georgia Power spokesperson Joshua Peacock told WSAV that turbines used in power plants are being produced in Georgia, and called the expansion a reinvestment in Coastal Georgia (WSAV). Georgia is already home to large gas generation projects, including the plant we covered in USDA Makes Record $3.3B Loan for Oglethorpe's Smarr Gas Plant in Georgia.
Implications for Owners, Developers, Contractors and Subs
For power and data center developers: More domestic turbine capacity will not shorten lead times right away, since the expansion runs to 2029, but it signals that equipment makers see sustained demand.
For industrial contractors: A 450,000 square foot heavy manufacturing addition requires crane rated steel, heavy foundations for machining equipment and substantial electrical and process utility work. Southeast firms with heavy industrial experience should watch for procurement once SEDA and the company finalize plans.
For subcontractors: Machine foundations, crane rails, compressed air and process piping, and high capacity electrical distribution are typical scopes on turbine manufacturing plants.
What to Watch
- A groundbreaking date and selection of a design builder or general contractor.
- Any state or local incentive agreements disclosed by SEDA.
- Hiring timelines for the 220 new positions.
Bottom Line
Mitsubishi Power's $490 million Savannah expansion will more than double its Georgia turbine plant to meet rising electricity demand. It joins a growing list of grid and generation equipment factories tracked in Grid Equipment Factory Wave: Seven U.S. Plant Projects Total $1.84 Billion.
