The City of Rochester has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking qualified firms to lead a major modernization of the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center. The $59.6 million modernization project represents the most significant renovation of the facility since it opened in 1985 and is designed to keep the convention center competitive as a leading meeting destination in upstate New York.
The project is funded by New York State and administered by Empire State Development, demonstrating continued state-level commitment to Rochester's downtown revitalization. The $59.6 million budget includes all project costs, including design, engineering, construction, construction management, furniture, fixtures, equipment, and contingency.
The modernization will upgrade nearly every part of the facility, including the Empire Exhibit Hall, the Lilac Ballroom, updated finishes and lighting, state-of-the-art A/V capabilities, major HVAC and electrical upgrades, new kitchen equipment, redesigned skyways, and enhanced accessibility features.
According to the City of Rochester's announcement (published December 9, 2025), design proposals are due by 4 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2026. The city is seeking design proposals from multidisciplinary teams with expertise in architecture, interior design, structural engineering, and specialized services including food-service design, audiovisual systems, lighting, and cost estimating.
Mayor Malik D. Evans emphasized the importance of this investment: "For nearly 40 years, the Rochester Riverside Convention Center has been a cornerstone of our local economy and a source of civic pride. This modernization will help maintain its role as a vibrant gathering place that attracts visitors, supports jobs, and strengthens downtown."
This $59.6 million project represents significant opportunity for construction firms and engineering teams in Rochester and demonstrates robust public sector investment in the downtown core.
